About Downtown Chicago:
Chicago is a city of world-class status and unsurpassed beauty, drawing visitors from around the nation and the globe. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the heart of the Midwest, Chicago is home to the blues, several sports teams, an internationally acclaimed symphony orchestra, spectacular live theater, celebrated architecture, and thousands of restaurants, museums and shopping.

Chicago is home to the world's first skyscraper designed by William Le Baron Jenney in 1885. Although the Home Insurance Building no longer stands, today Chicago is also home to two of the world's 15 tallest buildings including Willis Tower, which opened in 1974. Other city landmark buildings include the Chicago Cultural Center - completed in 1897 in the Beaux Arts style, Adler and Sullivan's 1889 Auditorium Building, and the Art Deco era Chicago Board of Trade Building, designed by Holabird and Root in 1929.

Downtown Chicago is a wonderful place to visit year-round. The Loop, as the commercial district is known, is home to some of the world’s tallest and most breathtaking skyscrapers. Sculptures fill the outdoor spaces in the Loop. Many of these works of art were created by masters like Pablo Picasso and Jean Dubuffet.

The Chicago River is the highlight of the downtown area, of course. This is the famous river that is dyed green every year on St. Patrick’s Day. River trips and tours are quite popular.

Grant Park adjoins the lake. This delightful park is home to the Grant Park Symphony. Natives and tourists both flock to the free concerts this orchestra puts on every summer. The Petrillo Bandshell and Buckingham Fountain can also be found in the park, and every year the Taste of Chicago food festival is held here.

Millennium Park is an addition to Grant Park that opened in 2004. This park features Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate sculpture and the Crown Fountain.

The downtown area is also the cultural center of the city. The Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Theatre can all be found downtown. The renowned Palmer House Hotel is on East Monroe Street and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Goodman Theatre are also in the area.

Shopping is another big draw for the Loop district. The Magnificent Mile is a shopping district filled with upscale malls. Stores such as Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue abound. The Loop Retail Historic District is home to a number of small shops and department stores, many of which are housed in buildings recognized as historic landmarks.

There are a number of great restaurants in the area, including Tru and Everest. There are many hotels in the Loop proper and in surrounding neighborhoods. The downtown area is accessible by car, bus and train.
