About Midway Airport:
Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) is located about 8 miles southwest of Chicago's main business district located in downtown. Chicago Midway Airport has been in use since it was opened in December of 1927, and is the second largest airport in the city of Chicago behind O'Hare International Airport. Midway Airport was named after the famous World War 2 battle.

Southwest is currently operating the most flights in and out of Chicago Midway Airport. The airport serves as a focus city for Southwest airlines, and is currently Southwest's largest focus city. Midway Airport contains two terminals; the second is filled entirely of only Southwest flights. Several other large airlines fly out of Chicago Midway Airport including Delta, AirTran and Frontier. These three airlines primarily fly to the cities of Atlanta, Detroit, Denver and Minneapolis. Southwest connects just about every major airport in the United States to Chicago through Midway Airport. ATA airlines flew the majority of its flights through Midway Airport before it went out of business in 2008.

An effort to privatize the airport was stopped in 2009 when the company could not receive all of the needed financing. If the plan would have went through, the airport would have continued to operate in the same manner. The privatizing company would have made their money through airport parking, passenger charges and purchases within the airport. The plan can still continue if the money ever becomes available.

Chicago Midway was incident free from 1976 until December of 2005. On the 8th of December in 2005, a Southwest plan was forced to make an emergency landing during a snowstorm. The plan crashed through several fences before it smashed two cars. A small child in the car was killed during the crash. Midway Airport has been incident free since the crash.
